No Petrol - but have a plug
The man
behind the bars

Ed Darmanin has spent the last 5 years making journeys solo and unassisted on electric motorcycles that nobody else has made. A retired electrical engineer from Sydney's northern beaches with more than 160,000 kilometres of personal electric vehicle experience, he combines a deeply methodical approach to planning with an appetite for genuinely uncharted terrain.

In 2022, riding a Harley-Davidson LiveWire, he became the first person to cross Australia by electric motorcycle — first  electric motorcycle from Sydney to Cape Tribulation, then the first electric motorcycle crossing of the Nullarbor, Perth to Sydney, a 4,500 kilometre run covered by ABC News as the most-read story in South Australia and the Northern Territory on the day it published.

In 2024, he rode his Energica Experia 5,000 kilometres from Sydney to Darwin via Birdsville — one of the most remote towns on the continent — including a 700 km stretch to Mount Isa two-up with his son Evan across outback roads where no electric motorcycle had ever been. He completed the journey ten weeks after a cardiac procedure. The bike performed flawlessly.

The 2026 Big Lap is the natural progression: a complete anti-clockwise 18,000km circumnavigation of Australia on the bike he knows best - his Energica Experia, across terrain he already understands, completing a record that has never been held.
