Airlie Beach to Palm Cove
Section 2 — Two-up with Wife Sally
Airlie Beach → Palm Cove
Through the Atherton Tablelands and tropical Far North Queensland.
1170km | 12 days
Why is this so challenging?
Every day still requires the same meticulous charging strategy — but now with a passenger on board. Adding a rider to an electric motorcycle reduces range, meaning every calculation from Section 1 has to be revised for the added load.
Sally joins Ed in Airlie Beach and they ride north through some of Australia’s most spectacular tropical scenery — Bowen, Townsville, Magnetic Island, Mission Beach, the Atherton Tablelands, the ancient Undara Lava Tubes, Yungaburra, and finally Palm Cove near Cairns. It’s one of the most beautiful stretches of riding on the continent.
Undara Lava Tubes
At Undara Volcanic National Park there is no fast charger. Ed and Sally rely on a standard household power point for two nights, managing their arrival charge precisely and doing the same to get back to Yungaburra. The DC fast charger in Atherton has been offline due to construction works — Ed has been monitoring its status for months, as it becomes critical again in Section 3. At Palm Cove, Sally hands over to son Evan. The family relay continues.
