Mt Isa to Broome

Section 4 — Ed Solo

Mt Isa → Broome

North through the NT via Katherine and Darwin, then west across the Kimberley to Broome — the halfway point.

3,523 km | 14 days

Why is this so challenging?

This is the section that would have been impossible on a petrol motorcycle if fuel restrictions tighten while Ed is riding it — and in 2026, that’s a genuine possibility.

Departing Mount Isa alone, Ed crosses the Barkly Tableland, rides the length of the Northern Territory through Katherine to Darwin, then pushes west across the full breadth of the Kimberley — Timber Creek, Lake Argyle, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing — to Broome.

In July/August 2026, it is the petrol vehicle that faces range anxiety in remote Australia — not the electric one. Dry servos are likely, with waits of up to 48 hours for fuel deliveries. Under Level 3 restrictions, the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act allows the government to cap fuel purchases per transaction at the bowser.

In the Kimberley, where service stations are hundreds of kilometres apart, any purchase cap creates genuine range anxiety for petrol vehicles. The Experia runs on domestic electricity — completely unaffected.

Along this route Ed will rely on isolated DC fast chargers running on off-grid solar to charge the Experia — including one at Ngumban Cliffs Rest Area between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing

The leg from Lake Argyle to Halls Creek alone is 429 km, requiring two fast charges to complete. Ed called pub owners, roadhouse managers and remote resort staff months in advance to confirm power point access for overnight charging. Broome marks the halfway point. New tyres. Sally flies in. The second half begins.
