Palm Cove to Mt Isa

Section 3 — Two-up with Son Evan

Palm Cove → Mt Isa

North first to Cape Tribulation, then west through the Gulf Developmental Road and Savannah Way to Mount Isa.

1,619 km | 11 days

Why is this so challenging?

The charging infrastructure thins dramatically as the route turns west. This is the Gulf Country — vast, remote, and largely off the EV map.

Evan joins Ed at Palm Cove and they head north first to Cape Tribulation before turning west into the Gulf Country via the Atherton Tablelands, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton and Karumba, then south through Burke and Wills Roadhouse to Cloncurry and Mount Isa. It’s one of the most remote riding routes in Australia.

Karumba is as far north as you can ride before hitting the Gulf of Carpentaria — a fishing town of a few hundred people where the charging plan lists Ash’s Café as a potential charge point, using a three-phase socket or a 15-amp caravan outlet.

The Burke and Wills Roadhouse, 269 km further south, specifically arranged a dedicated power point for EV charging after Ed contacted them months in advance.

For 11 days, father and son ride through some of Australia’s most beautiful and isolated country on a motorcycle that needs charging every 200 km — and where the next power point is sometimes a café’s back wall.
